Jolina Magdangal

Maria Jolina Perez Magdangal, or more commonly known simply as Jolina Magdangal or Jolens was born on November 6, 1978 in Quezon City, Philippines,is a popular singer, actress and television host from the Philippines. She was a former ABS-CBN singer, host and actress but later moved to GMA Network.

JOLINA Magdangal, one of the most popular young stars in the ‘90s, continues to be an enduring personality in show business. She has proved that she was no fluke when she shot up to stardom more than a decade ago.

Everyone in showbiz could not forget Jolina’s signature fashion statements, her hit singles, her box-office hit movies, and her top-rating TV shows. Today, Jolina remains to be the idol of many young upstarts in showbiz. How Jolina maintains her popularity is something that she bashfully shares to many newcomers.

“I never considered myself a very big star,” Jolens starts. “If there’s one person in a room who will (sic) appreciate what I do, masaya na ako roon. That’s how mababaw I am. I don’t need the big applauses (sic), the standing ovations. It only takes one person to say I’m good, that will literally brighten up my day.”

But petite Jolina seemed destined for bigger things. She got what she didn’t expect to achieve, but deep inside Jolina is still the simple girl whose first love was singing.

“When I joined showbiz, my real aim was to be a good singer. Nothing more. All the others that came after I consider as bonus. It’s really singing that I was associated with. It’s music that really lights up my life.”

This early in 2006, Jolina begins her year with two new achievements. First is her new magazine show titled Bongga Ka Star and second is her new album titled Tuloy Pa Rin Ang Awit under GMA Records.

In Bongga Ka Star, Jolina is given the opportunity to become a host of a show all to herself. As a feature of the magazine show, she gets to interview and get to know more about the featured star of the week. Still a fan-at-heart, Jolens makes her own style of being intimate with her subject. She says its different from hosting her daily show Starstruck: The Nationwide Invasion.
“I’m more of a listener than a talker,” she laughs. “That’s true. Since Bongga Ka Star is not a talk show, I only try to inject a few things that I’ve learned from my subject. Just like our pilot episode where we had Lorna Tolentino as guest, I found out so many things about her that I never knew. As fans, we have the tendency to regard the artista as a perfect creature, no flaws. But, like all of us, they are also human and can make mistakes. Those little details are the things we like to talk about in the show.”

Jolina’s life in showbiz is interesting enough as well. But she is the first to object. Jolen says that she still has more to experience in life.

“Kulang pa ang mga nangyari sa akin as compared sa ibang artista. I told a small percent of my life story in Magpakailanman. Hanggang doon na lang because I know that many more things will happen. Hindi pa time to put it all out. My life is not as open as many people in the business. May nire-reserve pa rin ako for myself.”

One of which is her relationship with Bebong Muñoz. Jolens five-year-old romance with Bebong has always been private. She only gives out a few details but chooses to keep the more private things intact.

“Matagal ko ring inalagaan ang relationship namin ni Bebong. Hindi naman showbiz ‘yung tao kaya I want him to be protected from intrigues. You know how cruel a few people in the business could be, ‘di ba? Though Bebong doesn’t mind because he’s really open to what will happen to our relationship in the future, but I chose to make things private for us. Iniisip ko rin kasi ang family niya. I want to show my respect to them by not involving Bebong in any controversy.”
One of the most frequently asked question to Jolina is mostly about getting married. At age 27, Jolens is more than ready to become a wife and mother. But she chose to take things slowly one at a time.

“I’m not in a rush though halos lahat they are asking kung kelan ako magpapakasal na? Bakit nila ako gusto mag-asawa ba? Sawa na ba sila sa akin?” she laughs out loud.

“I guess I can say that I’m financially, mentally, and physically ready for marriage. Even my parents say na okey na ako mag-asawa, sabihin ko lang. But I feel that it’s not that right time yet. Bebong is not pushing me to get married, he’s also concerned of my career. Gusto niyang mag-enjoy pa ako habang nandiyan pa.”

“But we already made a few plans. Parang pang-back-up just in case we decide to exchange ‘I do’ to each other. Yet I don’t see myself getting married soon. Mangyayari iyon but not this early.”

Jolina can finally say that she has found the one. And like her carrier single in her new album, “Maybe It’s You” (theme song of the Asianovela Kim Sam Soon), she can drop the ‘Maybe’ and stick with the titled ‘It’s You’.

“Why not?” she giggles. “Seriously, I guess everyone has a special someone waiting for him or her. I believe that God has made a match for all of us. For me, I already found him and we wouldn’t last five years if we weren’t doing something right. I’ve longed for the perfect man but instead I ended up with an almost perfect relationship.”
